Moderna Museet has one of Europe’s finest collections of photography, ranging from 1840 to the present day. Many of the most famous names in photographic history are represented, and the collection comprises more than 100,000 works.

Moderna Museet’s new directors, Daniel Birnbaum and Ann-Sofi Noring, now launch a new presentation of the museum's collection. The focus is on photography, which will gradually be given a more prominent position, only to fill the entire exhibition of the permanent collection this autumn.

The first stage of the rehanging of the collection Another Story: Possessed by the Camera (1970-2010) opens 24 February. It is a very promising start and there seems to be a great enthusiasm among the curators and staff of the Museum. No wonder. Photography is more popular than ever - the museum of photography "Fotografiska" that opened last spring in Stockholm is a major success. I am sure that Moderna Museet will attract many new visitors by giving access to its huge collection. They've got the knowledge and skills to make this project great.

When entering the first room of the exhibition I am saluted by several big size color prints created by Cindy Sherman. One of the prints is a newly received donation; Cindy Sherman, Untitled #143 from the Fairy Tales Series, 1985.

Annika von Hausswolff, I am the Runaway of your Thoughts, 2008 is another piece of work recently donated to the museum.

I am drawn to the wall of photographs up front in the room.  I find so many great pictures; Sally Mann, Graciela Iturbide, Robert Mapplethorpe, Helmut Newton, Irving Penn, Ralph Gibson...they are all there.

A wall with the great photographers Seydou Keita (Mali), Malick Sidibe (Mali) and Samuel Fosso (Cameroon) gets my attention.

Another room of the exhibition gives me some insight in "New Topographics" originally a very influental exhibition presented by George Eastman House in 1975. Here I find works by Berndt and Hilla Becher including a display of the Swedish photographer Gerry Johansson among others.

 Moderna Museet will also make their collection available in photobooks;

“We are planning to publish four new books about our photography collection together with the German publishing company Steidl. This will be a ground-breaking project, both for the wider public and for experts on photography" says Ann-Sofi Noring, co-director.
