591 Exhibition: Alfredo Muñoz de Oliveira

There isn’t only one truth but a complexity of facts that make life stories. To tell these stories we will cover all facts, always with a sense of humanism where the excluded and forgotten ones, among others, are our main concern.

This is our concept as photojournalism and documentary photographers. We won’t change the world but our stories will show social-cultural realities allowing a better conscience and understanding about what happens around us.

We will write the people stories as if it was our own, filling our collective memory.
~Alfredo Muñoz de Oliveira

Cova da Moura is an African ghetto in Lisbon where important social and educational work is done by an Association called Moinho da Juventude. They try to integrate their own people despite the gangs and social problems in this neighbourhood.

Some photos of what Alfredo calls resistants against the huge commercial areas in the cities.

The art of storytelling is becoming a lost art in America. Thankfully, it is alive and well in Portugal. Some time ago I was fortunate enough to find the work of Alfredo Muñoz de Oliveira. His photographs tell the life stories of the people in Portugal and other locations in a very powerful and real way. As we search for meaning and purpose in life, seeing and understanding the stories of others can only help us discover patterns and ideals to guide us in our pursuit. I am very pleased to present on 591 a few photographs from some of his series. - Rhonda

This is a very pleasant surprise indeed! I see Alfredo is still making excellent documentary images, as strong and as honest as ever. Great to see the pictures here especially following mine, what a nice coincidence.

To me the numbers 7 and 19 have that so calleed 'something more' photographicly and estheticly spoken, also the light and the mood is very efficient in those two superb little stories. I really like these two silent images. Thanks for sharing.
